India lost the first two matches, and stood a risk of conceding an unassailable 3-0 lead as they walked inside the Providence Stadium in Guyana on August 8, 2023. India had lost the second match at the same venue by two wickets.

West Indies elected to bat first in the day game and scored 159 runs for the loss of five wickets. Opener Brandon King top-scored for the team with 42 off 42 balls, but the rest of the three West Indies batters in top four failed to impress.

While King was caught and bowled by Kuldeep Yadav, his opening partner Kyle Mayer (25 off 20) was dismissed by Axar Patel. Johnson Charles came to bat at three but was trapped in front of the stumps by Kuldeep Yadav. He scored 12 runs off 14 balls.

West Indies were four down for 106 in 14.5 overs when captain Rovman Powell took the onus on him to give his team a strong finish. The hard-hitting batter scored 40 runs off just 19 balls to take West Indies past 150.

Kuldeep Yadav finished with figures of 3/28 in four overs, while Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar picked a wicket each. Mukesh got the wicket of Shimron Hetmyer (9 off 8). Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep did not pick any wicket.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma shine in India's run-chase

In reply, India lost their openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill for one and six runs respectively. But Mumbai Indians stars Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma joined forces to stitch an 87-run partnership off 51 balls.

Suryakumar Yadav was on fire and scored 83 runs off 44 balls. The innings consisted of 10 fours and four sixes. Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 49 off 37.

Two runs were needed off the last 14 deliveries when captain Hardik Pandya (20* off 15) denied Tilak Varma an opportunity for second consecutive T20I fifty. On the fifth ball of the 18th over, Hardik blasted a six over long off to keep India alive in the series. Suryakumar Yadav was decalred Man of the Match.
