Shreyas Iyer is a white-ball asset, who has fallen short of Test cricket. It is evident that his performances in ODIs and T20Is have not been on par with his performances in Tests - a format where he failed to seek solace.
His shoddy shot selection is something that he needs to keep an eye on, a flaw in his technique that has obviously dented his confidence levels. Rather than forcing his way through to find tranquillity in the format, Iyer’s intentions do leave question marks.

As we can see clearly, his inability to sort out his batting woes had a negative impact on his form. With a batting average of 36 in Tests, Iyer hasn't proved a viable option in the middle-order. These signs tell us that Test cricket isn't his strong suit.
In the absence of an experienced duo - Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the ongoing Vizag Test, Iyer, with all experience in his repertoire, takes a clear shot in the game where India are fighting to square up, following a shocking defeat to England in the Test opener in Hyderabad, has rather failed to make his presence count.
On a track where the England spinners found their task cut out, the 29-year-old failed to dictate terms and his poor shot selection came back to haunt him again. England’s slow left-arm orthodox spinner, Tom Hartley found a wicket out of nowhere due to Iyer’s shot selection.
The spinner bowled a short ball outside off which saw Iyer attempting to cut the ball. Nonetheless, his attempt saw him take an under edge off his willow as Ben Foakes took a perfect reflect catch, thus bringing Iyer’s innings to an end.
The Chembur-born squandered the chance to make it count as he was dismissed for 27. His performance in the last Test hasn’t been good either, where he scored 35 and 13 runs. With Kohli getting back in the mix for the third Test, Iyer might be out of the scheme of things.
