India opened their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with an eight-wicket win over Ireland on Wednesday (June 5).
It was a brilliant performance by Rohit Sharma and his team who showcased a dominant display at the Nassau County Stadium in New York.

Rohit Sharma and won the Toss and elected to field first. It was a difficult pitch to bat and Arshdeep Singh struck early for India. He got a couple of wickets, followed by Hardik Pandya, who scalped a brace quickly.
Jasprit Bumrah came in and did his magic as Irish were rattled on a difficult deck. Hardik Pandya led with the ball, taking three wickets in his spell. Jasprit Bumrah (2-6) and Arshdeep Singh (2-35) also secured key wickets. Gareth Delany was the highest scorer of Ireland scoring 26. Ireland were reeling at 50 for 8 at one stage and could only manage 96 runs before getting bowled out by India with four overs to spare.
India chased down 97 with more than seven overs to spare. Virat Kohli was out cheaply but captain Rohit made 52 off 37 balls before injury forced him off the field. The India captain sustained an injury on his arm and went off. Although Virat Kohli got dismissed for just 1, Rishabh Pant ensured India's victory with 46 balls remaining, scoring an unbeaten 36.

With the victory, India secured their eighth successive win over Ireland, which is joint most by any team against an opposition. India captain Rohit Sharma also equalled MS Dhoni's record for most T20I wins for an India captain. Both Rohit and Dhoni have led India to 43 T20I victories.

With the victory, India put their first points on board. They will be up against arch-rivals Pakistan in the very next match on Sunday in New York. Ireland will be taking on Canada on Friday in their next match.
