The match has been reduced to just five overs per side because of a wet outfield, with India captain Shreyas Iyer opting to bat first after winning the toss. However, the shortened contest began poorly for the visitors.

Opener Abhishek Sharma, who had smashed a record-breaking century in India's previous T20I series against Afghanistan, was dismissed for a first-ball duck. He was caught by Shoma Sugaya-Slater off the bowling of Charlie Hara-Hinze, leaving India at 7/1 after six balls.

Sanju Samson briefly provided some momentum, hitting one boundary during his seven-ball stay. However, the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed for 9 off 7 balls, caught by Benjamin Ito-Davis off Ibrahim Takahashi. India were reduced to 9/2 after 1.2 overs.

Ishan Kishan then joined Iyer at the crease, but India struggled to accelerate despite the limited number of overs. Kishan was unbeaten on 3 off 5 balls, while Iyer had scored 1 off 2 deliveries when rain again interrupted play.
