IND vs NED: Rohit Sharma breaks Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli's captaincy record, equals Sachin Tendulkar's feat

IND vs NED: Rohit Sharma on Sunday broke several records during his 54-ball knock for 61 runs against Netherlands at at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The opener once again gave the perfect start to India after winning the toss and opt to bat first.

The 36-year-old broke Sourav Ganguly's record for most runs by an Indian captain in a single edition of the World Cup. Ganguly had scored 465 runs in the 2003 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma also went past the likes of Virat Kohli (443 in 2019) and Mohammad Azharuddin (332 in 1992 World Cup). Kapil Dev is fifth in the list. He scored 303 runs in the 1983 World Cup which India won by beating West Indies.

Further, the Mumbai batter also equalled Sachin Tendulkar. He is only the second batter after the former opener to score 500-plus runs twice in ODI World Cups.

Sachin Tendulkar achieved the feat in 1996 and 2003 World Cup editions. Rohit Sharma crossed the 500-run mark in 2019 World Cup as well. He is the first batter to achieve the feat in successive World Cup editions.

Rohit Sharma now also holds the record for most ODI sixes in a calendar year. He broke AB de Villiers' 2015 record. The former South Africa batter hit 58 sixes back then. Rohit went past the tally after hitting two sixes in his 61-run knock on Sunday.

The star batter now has the fourth-highest number of runs in World Cup 2023. He has scored 503 runs at an average of 55.89 and a strike rate of 121.49.
