Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma's recent struggles in Test cricket have sparked concern among fans and experts, as his aggressive approach and early dismissals leave India in challenging positions. The 2nd Test against New Zealand in Pune further exposed his vulnerability.

Especially as Tim Southee bowled a brilliant delivery that uprooted Rohit's off stump, sending him back for a nine-ball duck. This marked Rohit's fifth single-digit score in his last seven Test innings, with just one fifty and an explosive 23 off 11 balls against Bangladesh as his only exceptions.

Rohit's inconsistent form as a Test opener and captain is evident, with his recent innings yielding less than 100 runs across seven outings. Since India's loss in the 2023 World Test Championship Final, Rohit has failed to maintain the stability once expected of him.

While he has managed three centuries and four half-centuries in 23 innings, his recent form has left fans and experts questioning his approach. "Intent can come later," suggested India's head coach Gautam Gambhir, who believes that Rohit should ground his aggressive style in solid defense to provide stability at the top order.

Critics argue that while Rohit's attack-oriented captaincy has brought a fresh approach to India's game, his tendency to go for risky shots early in his innings may be costing the team. Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar expressed concerns about Rohit's defensive technique.

"When there is a little bit of seam, that same loose defense we saw at the start of his career seems to reappear. Tightening up his defense could make a huge difference," Manjrekar noted. Rohit's aggressive innings have proven valuable in shorter formats.

However, in Tests, the opener's role requires a mix of patience and shot selection, particularly in overseas conditions. In 2021, for example, Rohit averaged over 47 while taking a more restrained approach against Australia and England. However, his 2024 average has dipped to 32.14, with his high strike rate of 66.62 proving less favorable for Test cricket.

With India set to tour Australia and contend for another World Test Championship Final, fans are hopeful that Rohit will find a balance between aggression and caution. As Gambhir and other cricket experts suggest, focusing on a steady defense could enable Rohit to anchor the innings more effectively and lead his team to greater success.
