IND vs NZ: Ajinkya Rahane Backs Auqib Nabi To Exploit New Zealand Conditions In ODI Series

New Zealand's familiar swing-friendly conditions could provide Auqib Nabi with the perfect opportunity to make a strong impression in India's upcoming ODI series. The Jammu and Kashmir pacer, who is still establishing himself at the international level, has received backing from former India batter Ajinkya Rahane, who believes the conditions across the series could work in his favour.

India's five-match ODI series against New Zealand begins on November 4, with the visitors looking to strengthen their bowling combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Nabi's inclusion has gained importance after Prasidh Krishna was ruled out of the series with a left hamstring injury.

Rahane believes the opportunity could help the youngster demonstrate his abilities, particularly with the ball expected to move in New Zealand. Speaking on SonyLIV, the former India captain acknowledged Krishna's absence but felt Nabi could benefit from the circumstances.

"These conditions might be useful for him," Rahane said at a show.

Why New Zealand Conditions Could Suit Auqib Nabi?

Rahane explained that the availability of swing and seam movement makes New Zealand a potentially favourable destination for bowlers who consistently hit the right areas. He also highlighted Nabi's ability to maintain disciplined lines and lengths.

"We get to see swing and seam movement in New Zealand, and Auqib Nabi is a seam bowler who bowls consistently in good areas," Rahane added.

Nabi has already had a difficult introduction to international cricket. Making his ODI debut against the West Indies in Guwahati, he conceded 84 runs in 8.5 overs without taking a wicket. However, his subsequent performance for India A against New Zealand A offered encouraging signs, as he picked up six wickets across two innings in the four-day encounter at Lincoln.

The 29-year-old was initially selected for the fourth and fifth ODIs but was subsequently added to the squad for the opening three matches following Krishna's injury.

Rahane also identified Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar and Anshul Kamboj as India's other pace options, suggesting the series presents an important opportunity for the entire bowling group to make an impact.

India will head into the ODI series after winning the five-match T20I series 3-2 under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. For the upcoming 50-over assignment, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have also joined the team.
