IND vs NZ ICC Knockouts & ODI History: India-New Zealand Previous Battles Ahead of Champions Trophy 2025 Final

By MyKhel Staff

IND vs NZ History: India and New Zealand have booked a rematch from 25 years ago when the two sides clash in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Sunday (March 9).

Chris Cairns starred with a century in 2000 ICC KnockOuts Final as New Zealand had broken Indian hearts to win their first ICC trophy. Four years ago, the Black Caps once again got the better of the Men in Blue to win the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final.

India vs New Zealand history

The rivalry between India and New Zealand has picked up pace in recent years with the Kiwis getting the better of the Asian side in most of the ICC events. Team India, however, have rebounded with three back-to-back wins against New Zealand in ICC tournaments since going on a barren run.

While the 2000 KnockOuts Final and WTC Final are two summit clash meetings between the two sides, the India-New Zealand rivalry in ODI cricket and ICC events dates back to 1975 when they met at the Cricket World Cup in Manchester.

India vs New Zealand History in ICC Events and ODI cricket

In their first-ever limited overs meeting which was a 60-over match, India scored 230 riding on Abid Ali's 70. In reply, New Zealand captain Glenn Turner scored an unbeaten 114 to help the Kiwis over the line in 58.5 overs in the 1975 World Cup group stage match.

Four years later, New Zealand got the better of India again in the 1979 Cricket World Cup in Leeds. At Headingley, India could only post 182 in their allotted 60 overs. In response, New Zealand rode on Bruce Edgar's 84 to finish the chase in 57 overs with 8 wickets in hand.

Before their next meeting in an ICC event, India and New Zealand locked horns in different tournaments and series from 1980 to 1986. In 14 matches, both teams split 7 wins each as India opened their account on the global stage, managing to win the 1983 World Cup during that period.

In their next World Cup meeting, India did the double over New Zealand in the group stage of the home tournament, beating the Kiwis by 16 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru before a 3-wicket win at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground in Nagpur.

Since the 1987 World Cup double against the Black Caps, India went on a winning spree, beating the Kiwis in 7 of 8 matches until they next met again in an ICC event - 1992 World Cup, when New Zealand beat the Men in Blue by 4 wickets in Dunedin.

While they did not meet in the next World Cup, India and New Zealand faced off in the 50-over format in various series and tournaments until they cross paths again in an ICC tournament - the 1999 World Cup when the Kiwis once again emerged victorious in Nottingham by 5 wickets.

The next year, the two sides clashed in their only Champions Trophy meeting till they met earlier this year in the group stages, when India continued their winning streak against the Black Caps.

In between the 2000 KnockOuts final and 2025 Champions Trophy group stage meeting, India and New Zealand played in a few more matches on the global stage, including the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup and World Test Championship final.

In the 2003 ODI World Cup, Zaheer Khan, Mohammad Kaif and Rahul Dravid starred as India defeated New Zealand by 7 wickets at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. After the 2003 World Cup meeting, India and New Zealand again met in a 50-over World Cup only in 2019.

In 2019 World Cup semi-final, Black Caps proved to be India's nemesis as they pulled off a stunning 18-run victory, defending a total of just 239 at Old Trafford in Manchester. Four years later, India avenged the heartbreak by sending out the Kiwis at the last four stage.

In 2023 ODI World, Rohit Sharma & Co claimed a 4-wicket win at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, where Daryl Mitchell's century was overshadowed by a brilliant knock from Virat Kohli, who once again was key in India's 70-run victory over the Kiwis in the semi-final.

In their second meeting in Champions Trophy, Varun Aaron spun web across the Kiwi batters with a five-wicket haul after Shreyas Iyer's pivotal innings with the bat as India defeated the Black Caps by 40 runs.

Overall, the two sides have crossed paths 119 times in ODIs. India has had the advantage with 61 wins as opposed to 50 wins of the Kiwis, while 1 match has ended in a tie, and 7 matches finished in no results.
