IND vs NZ: New Zealand Become First Team to Inflict Whitewash on India in India in a 3-Match Test Series

By MyKhel Staff

New Zealand scripted history as they became the first team to inflict a whitewash on India in India in a three-match Test series. The Kiwis had sealed their first-ever series win in Pune last week, and followed that up with an impressive win in Mumbai to complete a 3-0 clean sweep.

Ajaz Patel claimed 11 wickets in the Mumbai Test as New Zealand successfully defended 147, bowling out the home side for 121 in the fourth innings at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday (November 3).

New Zealand historic whitewash of India

India had conceded a home Test series after a long spell of 12 years. The Black Caps got the better of India in Bengaluru and Pune to break the home side's 18-series win streak at home. They carried confidence from that to complete the clean sweep.

Chasing 147 on a wicket that turned from Day 1, India batters collapsed, starting with the dismissal of skipper Rohit Sharma by Matt Henry. Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips then combined to claimed the remaining 9 wickets to claim a historic win.

Shubman Gill was Ajaz Patel's first scalp. Soon Virat Kohli handed the spinner his second wicket for just one run, edging one to to Daryl Mitchell at slip. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was also trapped leg-before-wicket by Glenn Phillips for five runs.

Sarfaraz sweeped a full toss to deep midwicket in the hands of Rachin Ravindra, handing Patel his third wicket and getting out for one. Half of Indian line-up was inside the pavillion for 29 runs.

Rishabh Pant led the fightback alongside Ravindra Jadeja first, giving India some hope. Pant starteed to target spinners bravely, finding some boundaries against Ajaz and Phillips.

However, the Pant-Jadeja partnership ended at 42 runs, with Jadeja getting caught at short leg by Will Young who took a one-handed stunner, handing Ajaz his fourth wicket.

Pant, who remained unaffected by wickets falling at the other end, brough up his half-century in 48 balls, sharing a stand with Washngton Sundar to take India closer to the target.

But once Pant was contorversially dismissed caught behind with the third unpire ruling a very close call in favour of the visitors, then the Kiwis removed three other wickets in quicktime. In fact, India lost three wickets with the score at 121 to fall short by 26 runs.

This result marked the first time India have been whitewashed in a home Test series of three or more matches. And this also saw New Zealand become the fourth side to whitewash India in a series of 3 or more Tests after England (4), Australia (3), and West Indies (once).
