IND vs NZ: 'Poor fielder, Poor batting!' - Rohit Sharma trolled by fans for dropped catch in Champions Trophy final

By MyKhel Staff

IND vs NZ Final: Rohit Sharma faced the wrath of fans on social media after dropping a crucial catch during the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand. The India skipper, stationed at short mid-wicket, failed to hold onto a diving chance in the 35th over, giving Daryl Mitchell a lucky reprieve.

The drop marked India's third missed opportunity in the field, with Rachin Ravindra benefitting from two earlier chances. While Rohit made an effort to react in time, the ball ultimately slipped through his fingers.

If that wasn't enough, vice-captain Shubman Gill followed suit in the very next over, spilling a regulation catch at deep square leg to hand Glenn Phillips a lifeline. Axar Patel had cleverly set up the Kiwi batter with a flighted delivery, only for Gill's hands to let India down once again. With four missed chances in the innings, India's sloppy fielding became a major talking point, triggering a wave of reactions online.

Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration. One user, Andleeb Akhtar, didn't hold back, posting, "Can't bat. Can't ball. Can't field. Why you are in team @ImRo45? #RohitSharma #INDvsNZ" alongside an image of Rohit's misfield. The tweet quickly gained traction among cricket fans questioning the Indian captain's all-round form.

Another fan, Forever_ICT, poked fun at Rohit's diving attempt, tweeting, "#RohitSharma thought he is Glenn Phillips 😂😂 #INDvsNZ" alongside a clip comparing the two fielders. The contrast in athleticism between the two players became a source of amusement for many.

Adding to the humor, Netaji Nonsense shared a meme captioned, "Cricket fans to #RohitSharma after he dropped a catch and lost his 12th toss. #INDvsNZ"-highlighting Rohit's misfortunes both on the field and at the coin toss.

The fielding woes were not limited to just Rohit and Gill, as several other Indian players faltered under pressure. Abhishek Agrawal summed it up best with his post, "Team India today in fielding: too many missed chances. #INDvsNZ #ChampionsTrophyFinal #ICCChampionsTrophy #TeamIndia #RohitSharma #Gill #Iyer."

Meanwhile, some fans defended the Indian captain. Prachi Bora posted, "Fat men don't jump for a catch the way Rohit did just now, only fit men do. But some self-professed body shaming athletic experts will say that he couldn't catch it because he is fat. Good try #RohitSharma. #INDvsNZ #ChampionsTrophy2025."

With crucial moments slipping away, India's fielding unit had a night to forget, and social media ensured Rohit Sharma bore the brunt of the criticism.
