Ravichandran Ashwin took to the crease at number 10 for the first time in his Test career during the second day of the third Test against New Zealand at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.
Throughout his Test career, Ashwin has predominantly batted at number 8. In this position, he has accumulated 1977 runs over 83 innings, boasting an average of 26.01. His achievements include four centuries and seven half-centuries, showcasing his capability with the bat.

Ashwin has also demonstrated proficiency when batting at number 6. In this slot, he has scored 531 runs at an average of 35.40, which includes two centuries in Test matches. Before this match against New Zealand, Ashwin's lowest batting position was number 9. The only other instance where Ashwin batted at number 10 was during a T20I match against England in 2011.
During this particular innings against New Zealand, Ashwin's time at the crease was brief. He managed to score six runs off 13 balls before edging a delivery from Ajaz Patel to Daryl Mitchell at slip while attempting a defensive shot.
But after his disappointing outing with the bat, Ashwin compensated brilliantly with the ball. The off-spinner picked up three wickets as the Kiwis find themselves at 171 for 9 at the end of Day 2, with a lead of 143 runs.
Ashwin got the crucial wicket of Will Young, who batted brilliantly for 51 runs. He also dismissed Rachin Ravindra and the dangerous Glenn Phillips.
Along with the bowling, Ashwin's highlight of the day was a tremendous catch. The veteran ran off metres backwards before grabbing a stunning catch to depart Daryl Mitchell at a crucial juncture of the match. Ashwin was visibly ecstatic after completing the catch, while the bowler Ravindra Jadeja was also in awe.
India have already lost the Test series against New Zealand but a win in Mumbai will be crucial for them for the WTC final prospects. India will be hoping to pick the final Kiwi wicket on Sunday quickly but it promises to be a tricky chase on a turning Wankhede pitch.
