IND vs NZ: Rohit Sharma admits misjudgement in reading the pitch after Team India succumb to 46 all out

By MyKhel Staff

India skipper Rohit Sharma on Thursday (October 17) put up a brave face as he turned up for the press conference after stumps after his team's embarrassing 46 all out on day two of the first Test against New Zealand.

In a batting collapse of epic proportions, Team India were bundled out cheaply for a 46 by a quality New Zealand pace attack, which made most of the conducive conditions at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

IND vs NZ Rohit Sharma admits reading the pitch wrongly after Team India succumb to 46 all out

It was India's lowest innings total at home in their Test history as five batters failed to open their account, reminding some of the 36 all out in Adelaide during the opening Test of the previous Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In response, New Zealand reached 180 for three at stumps in 50 overs and took a lead of 134 runs, with opener Devon Conway top-scoring 91.

While interacting with the media at the close of play, Rohit admitted that he and the team management didn't read the pitch well and paid the price.

Taking responsibility for wrongly assessing the track, Rohit said, "I am hurting to see this score of 46 as Captain as it was my call to bat first."

The Mumbaikar - who was dismissed for a 16-ball 2 - while speaking with the media persons said, "We thought, it won't help seamers much after the first session or so, there wasn't much grass too. We thought it would be flat. It was a misjudgement and I couldn't read the pitch well."

One of the biggest talking points of the entire Indian innings was the surprise promotion of Virat Kohli to number three, Rohit said, "We didn't want to chop and change KL Rahul's batting position, and Sarfaraz as well, so Virat Kohli came and took the responsibility to bat at No.3, it's a great sign when a senior does that".

Although Kohli failed to deliver with the bat as the adopted son of Bengaluru was dismissed for a duck, much to the fans' disappointment. Rahul too failed to score and departed without troubling the scorer, leading to India's batting collapse under challenging conditions.
