IND vs NZ: Why Hardik Pandya Is Not Selected For New Zealand ODI Series? Explained

Hardik Pandya's absence from India's ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand has sparked plenty of discussion among fans. Given his stature as one of India's most impactful all-rounders, his non-selection has naturally raised questions.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has laid out clear reasons behind the decision, with long-term planning firmly in focus.

Hardik Pandya

The primary factor behind Pandya being left out is fitness. According to the BCCI, the all-rounder has not yet been cleared by the Centre of Excellence (CoE) to bowl a full quota of 10 overs in a 50-over match. While Pandya is fully fit to bat and has been active in T20 cricket, the demands of ODI bowling place a significantly higher load on his body. The selectors and medical team have therefore opted for caution rather than risk aggravating his condition.

Pandya last played an ODI in February 2025 during the ICC Champions Trophy. Since then, he has largely featured only in T20Is. Even in domestic cricket, his bowling workload has been carefully managed. During the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025/26, Pandya impressed with the bat, smashing 133 off 92 balls, but bowled just two overs in that match-another indicator of his restricted bowling capacity at present.

Workload management is another major reason behind the call. With the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 approaching, the BCCI is keen to ensure that Pandya is at peak fitness for the shortest format, where he remains India's key all-rounder and a proven match-winner. The board has repeatedly emphasized that protecting Pandya from overuse injuries is a priority, especially given his history with fitness setbacks.

It is also worth noting that Pandya only recently returned to competitive action after a quadriceps injury suffered during the Asia Cup 2025, which kept him sidelined for nearly two months. He made his comeback later in the year during a five-match T20I series against South Africa, further reinforcing the idea that his return is being phased carefully.

In Pandya's absence, India have opted for a balanced ODI squad with other all-round options, while keeping an eye on the bigger picture. The decision may disappoint fans in the short term, but from a team management perspective, it reflects a strategic move aimed at preserving one of India's most valuable assets for future global tournaments.
