IND vs NZ, World Cup 2023 Match 21: Awards List, Man of The Match, Key Stats, Presentation Ceremony

IND vs NZ, World Cup 2023 Match 21: India defeated New Zealand by four wickets to stay unbeaten in the World Cup 2023. India chased down the 274-run target at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala with two overs to spare.

Virat Kohli mastered another run-chase for India and scored 95 runs off 104 balls. He made another orchestrated attempt to reach his record-equalling 49th ODI hundred but ended up getting caught out at deep mid-wicket while trying to clear the boundary rope when India needed just five to win.

Ravindra Jadeja also stepped up in the absence of Hardik Pandya and an unfortunate run out dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav (2 off 4), scoring 39 unbeaten runs off 44 balls and finishing off the match with a boundary.

Captain Rohit Sharma scored another handy knock of 46 runs from 40 balls and his opening stand with Shubman Gill (26) accounted for 71 runs. Both the batters were dismissed by Lockie Ferguson. Shreyas Iyer hit six boundaries en route to his 29-ball 33. KL Rahul scored 27 off 35 before getting trapped by Mitchell Santner.

Earlier in the day, Mohammed Shami - who was playing his first match of the World Cup 2023 - spoiled New Zealand's party after a 159-run partnership between Rachin Ravindra (75) and Daryl Mitchell (130) for the third wicket. New Zealand lost two early wickets but then found themselves cruising at 178/2 in 33.2 over.

But once Shami got rid of Ravindra, New Zealand lost the plot. Kuldeep Yadav (2/73) was costly but capitalised on the gate opened by Shami and picked the wickets of Tom Latham (5) and Glenn Phillips (23).

Jasprit Bumrah (1/45) dismissed Mark Chapman (6) before Shami clean bowled Mitchell Santner (1) and Matt Henry (0) on consecutive deliveries and then got the wicket of Daryl Mitchell in the last over to complete his second World Cup five-fer. Lockie Ferguson got run out on the final ball of the 50th over as New Zealand were bundled out for 273.

Man of the Match: Mohammed Shami (IND) for picking five wickets for 54 runs in the match.

IND vs NZ, World Cup 2023: Who Said What?

Mohammed Shami (man of the Match): Got a lot of confidence after taking a wicket on the first ball. If your teammates are doing well, you should support them, it's important that the team performs well, I understand that. It was important to pick those late wickets, you always want your team to be the top side. Very happy that I got those wickets and India is on top of the table.

Tom Latham (New Zealand captain): We played reasonably well. We didn't quite capitalize in the last 10. We left a little out there. But credit to India. We weren't able to get the double breakthrough with the ball. Rachin and Mitchell had a fantastic partnership to set us up for the last 10. We have a perfect group.

We want to be in those positions. Rachin with the bat, Daryl with the 100. The bowlers did well. He played a fantastic innings. He controlled the tempo for them for others to bat around him. Just try to be proactive and focus on the matchups a little. Another good innings from him. We have a few days off. We have a day game here. We want to do good stuffs.

Rohit Sharma (India captain): Good start to the tournament. Job is half done. Important to stay balanced. Not to think too far ahead. Important to stay in the present. Shami took the opportunity with both hands. He has the experience in these conditions and is a class bowler.

At one stage, we were looking at 300 plus. Credit to our bowlers at the back end. I am enjoying my batting. Both are different personalities but we (Him and Gill) compliment each other.

Happy that we won. Nothing much to say. He (Kohli) has done this for us so many years. He backed himself to do the job. Kohli and Jadeja pulled us back when we lost a few wickets in the middle. The fielding is something we pride ourselves on.

Today the fielding wasn't clinical. Ravindra Jadeja is one of the best fielders in the world. These things happen. We know that fielding is something that will decide a lot of things going forward. We love travelling and playing in different parts of the game.
