India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match was forced into the reserve day (Monday, September 11) after persistent rains washed out play in Colombo on the originally scheduled date of Sunday, September 10.
After waiting for nearly four hours that saw the ground-staff of R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, work hard to get the outfield dry, and a few inspections from the match officials, who said play will resume, only for the rain to return to force the match into the reserve day.

The match will resume from where it stopped, meaning India will resume their innings at 147/2 in 24.1 overs. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul will walk out to bat as Indian batters will face Pakistan in the remaining 25.5 overs of the 50-over innings.
This isn't the first time matches have been pushed to reserve days. While league stage matches are just called off and declared as a 'no-result' awarding a point to each team, crucial games, especially the knock out games, have been given a reserve day in the past.
This India vs Pakistan clash is a special case as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has only provided a reserve day to this match and the final. This is also the fourth time, India will be playing one of their matches on the reserve day.
So far, India has been involved in three matches that have been forced into the next day or the reserve day. The India vs Pakistan match in Asia Cup will be the fourth instance when the Men in Blue will resume or play the match on the reserve day.
Here we take a look at the previous instances when India played an ODI match on a reserve day and how those matches ended, starting with the first instance in 1999 and the most recent in 2019:
A group-stage match in the 1999 World Cup between India and hosts England had been halted due to rain on the originally scheduled date of Saturday, May 29th 1999 and was pushed to a reserve day (Sunday, May 30th 1999).
India had posted 232/8 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Chasing the target of 233, England were 73/3 in 20.3 overs when rain halted play, forcing the match into the reserve day, when Indian seamers bowled England out for 169 to seal a 63-run win that saw them move into the Super Six stage.
The final of the 2002 Champion's Trophy between India and Sri Lanka was forced into three days without obtaining a result. Interestingly it was at the same venue where India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match is scheduled to take place - R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Unlike the latest rule of resuming the innings from where it was stopped, the reserve day in this tournament saw the match start as a fresh one with both teams getting 50-overs each.
On the originally scheduled date (September 29th 2002) of the ICC Champions Trophy final, the match was hit by rain in the second innings after Sri Lanka had scored 244 and India were 14 runs into the chase before rain halted the game and the match had to be called off for the day.
Starting fresh on the reserve day (September 30th 2002), Sri Lanka again posted a score of 222/7 in 50 overs. In response, India scored 38/1 in 8.4 overs when rain stopped play and forced the trophy to be shared by both teams, who were declared co-champions.
The semi-final clash of the ICC World Cup 2019 between India and New Zealand that was halted due to rain in the 47th over of the first innings at the Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester on Tuesday, July 9 2019.
And after a long wait, inspections and lasting discussion among the match officials, the match was called off and pushed to the reserve day, that is Wednesday, July 10 2019, when New Zealand resumed their innings at 211/5 in 46.5 overs.
The Blackcaps added another 28 runs to their total in the remaining 3.1 overs. Chasing a small target, India were put on the backfoot after Matt Henry and Trent Boult ran through the top order. India fought back through a stand from MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, but eventually fell short of the target by 19 runs.
Now, the India vs Pakistan super four match in the Asia Cup 2023 is the latest to fall victim to rain, forcing the game into the reserve day. What will be the end result? One thing is for sure, the points will be shared should the game be called off on September 11th 2023 as well.
Unlike the last time in 2002 when the reserve day at the very same venue saw the match restart instead of resume, the Asia Cup 2023 match will resume from where it was stopped. So, there is no trophy that will be shared as it's still the Super four stage.
But the weather forecast for the next week doesn't look promising, meaning the Asia Cup 2023 final also could go into the reserve day if the result is not obtained on the same day (September 17).
According to ICC, each team must have played at least 20 overs to obtain a result, unless one team has been all out in less than 20 overs or unless the team batting second scores enough runs to win in less than 20 overs.
