IND vs PAK, ICC World Cup 2023: India not keen on tailoring pitches to win matches

By Indranil Basu

The desire to score runs in the sub-continent is a good thing but not having the technique to score against spinners isn't exactly good news? In ODIs, most of the matches are won and lost in the middle overs, wherein the spinners operate the most.

Keeping the spin factor in mind during the ICC World Cup 2023 and how the Indians have always preferred playing on slow tracks, the Pakistanis are already accusing India of preparing spin-friendly pitches to suit India's bowling attack.

The arch-rivals had raised similar voices in the 2011 World Cup semi-final when India had upstaged Pakistan and went on to win the title. Sadly, even after 12 years Pakistan hasn't changed its perspective. It's still the same.

If playing against fast bowlers is an art, what about playing quality spin? Not that India have admitted to making spin-friendly wickets for the ICC World Cup 2023 but instead no such instruction has come from ICC to BCCI in regard to pitch preparation. The objective of the BCCI is simple and that is to make good batting tracks.

Many concerns were raised over India's Lucknow match pitch against England, which was slow and low, but became a perfect batting paradise after BCCI and ICC were involved in re-laying the pitch.

Not just Gautam Gambhir who loved captaining a side on spinning track, Rohit Sharma has a similar story. But the narrative of this World Cup is to produce best cricket pitches and retain the character of those venues which are hosting these games.

As reported by MyKhel earlier, there won't be any turners but that doesn't mean the ball won't turn. Even if the DDCA that hosted the India Vs Afghanistan game wanted to produce a turning track, it wouldn't have managed to do it.

That is because the pitch can't change it's character overnight. If Kotla has turned out to be a flat den, so be it --- every team has to play well on those tracks. So, there is no point in cribbing.

If the home team is mulling to tweak the pitch as per their requirement, it won't be that easy. And when you are threatening to be best in the business, what is the point of preparing slow and low wickets. More so when India's batting is filled with a bunch of stroke-makers, why worry?

Even India's pace bowling department is reaping rich dividends because of Jasprit Bumrah showing his dangerous skills to move the ball either ways with some nagging line and length. The pace attack is so good that even Mohd Shami' can't get into the playing XI.

So, what is the point of preparing spin friendly pitches. The best part of the story is that we have the best spin attack in the world -- Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav -- who can also bowl on sporting wickets. Here in rests the case!
