IND vs PAK ODI World Cup History: One of the most intense rivalry is set to take centre stage in the ICC World Cup 2023 on Saturday (October 14) when the world's largest cricket venue - Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad plays host to India vs Pakistan.

The cricket matches between the two neighbouring nations, that have bitter diplomatic relationship, is considered one of the biggest and most watched game in the world. And when it's in a marquee tournament like the World Cup, the intensity gets even higher.

Both sides come into the match on a perfect record in the ongoing tournament, having won two in two so far. While India beat Australia and Afghanistan in their opening two encounters, Pakistan beat Netherlands and Sri Lanka in their first two matches.

India vs Pakistan ODI World Cup History

India and Pakistan, are two of the eight founding members of the Cricket World Cup, which was first held in 1975 in England. The two teams have been part of all the 13 ODI World Cup right from the start as 60-over format that later evolved into 50-over format.

In their previous 12 appearances, India has won the tournament two times, first when they broke the West Indies dominance in 1983 under the leadership of Kapil Dev at the home of cricket - Lord's and most recently under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2011 at the Wankhede.

Pakistan, on the other hand, has won the tournament only once in 1992 under the leadership of Imran Khan as the team clinched the title by beating England in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

How India beat Pakistan in the seven previous ODI World Cup meetings?

1992 World Cup: The round-robin encounter on March 4, 1992 was reduced to 49 overs per side due to slow overrate by Pakistan at the SCG in Sydney. India rode on Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten 54 to set a target of 217, which Pakistan fell short by 43 runs despite Amir Sohail's knock of 62.

Manoj Prabhakar was the pick of the bowlers for India with figures of 2 for 22 in 10 overs, while Kapil Dev and Javagal Srinath also claimed two wickets each. Tendulkar was awarded the man of the match for his fifty and 1 for 37 performance with the ball.

1996 World Cup: In the quarterfinal clash that saw some tense moments between Amir Sohail and Venkatesh Prasad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on March 9, 1996, India ran out victors by 39 runs.

India rode on eventual man of the match, Navjot Singh Sidhu's knock of 93 to set a challenging target of 288 before Prasad's figures of 3 for 45 that also included the scalp of Pakistan's top-scorer Sohail proved crucial.

1999 World Cup: A lethal spell from player of the match Prasad helped India beat Pakistan by 47 runs at Old Trafford, Manchester on June 8, 1999. Rahul Dravid (61) and Mohammed Azharuddin (59) fifties took India to 227/6 in 50 overs before Prasad's 5 for 27 floored Pakistan for 180.

While Prasad was the pick of the bowlers with a five-wicket haul, his Karnataka teammates Javagal Srinath (3 for 37) and Anil Kumble (2 for 43) cleaned up the rest of the Pakistan batting order that saw Inzamam Ul Haq top-score with 41.

2003 World Cup: The Centurion witnessed Tendulkar and Co take apart Pakistan pace attack, especially Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar en-route to a 6-wicket win in their run chase of 274 on March 1, 2003.

After Saeed Anwar century had powered Pakistan to 273/7, player of the match Tendulkar, who fell two short of a hundred, set the platform for Dravid (44*) and Yuvraj Singh (50*) to see the team home.

2011 World Cup: Once again it was Tendulkar, who bagged the man of the match, that played a crucial knock of 85 to set a target of 261 in the semifinal, before an all round bowling effort bundled out Pakistan for 231 at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on March 30, 2011.

2015 World Cup: During the group stage match at the Adelaide Oval on February 15, 2015, Virat Kohli's hundred powered India to 300 for 7 in 50 overs before Mohammed Shami did the damage with the ball to bowl out Pakistan for 224.

Apart from man of the match Kohli, Suresh Raina (74) and Shikhar Dhawan (73) also made useful contributions with the bat as Sohail Khan finished with a five-wicket haul for Pakistan. For India, Shami was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 for 35.

2019 World Cup: In the round-robin stage at Old Trafford, Manchester on June 16, 2019, India rode on Rohit Sharma's knock of 140 from 113 balls to set a target of 337, which was later reduced to 301 in 40 overs after rain interrupted play, but Pakistan could only manage to score 212 in response.
