The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan veterans’ clash in the 2025 World Championship of Legends (WCL), scheduled for July 20 at Edgbaston, Birmingham has been cancelled.
On April 22, 2025, a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, claimed the lives of 26 Indian civilians. The incident led to renewed tensions between India and Pakistan, including a brief military standoff, and reignited strong emotions in both countries.

In this atmosphere, news of the India-Pakistan WCL match triggered widespread public outrage, particularly in India, where the wounds from Pahalgam remained raw.
As the game approached, several Indian cricket legends opted out, citing the prevailing geopolitical situation and the national mood. Player withdrawals began surfacing openly by July 19, less than 24 hours before the scheduled start. Notably, the public saw several announcements and statements from players expressing their discomfort with participating in the match.
Most of these players cited either national sentiment or social media backlash as decisive factors in their decisions.
Facing mounting criticism and an intensifying boycott, WCL organizers released a formal apology and called off the match less than a day before its scheduled start. In the official statement, WCL acknowledged that their intention was to create positive memories through sport, inspired by recent friendly encounters in other disciplines. However, they admitted to unintentionally “hurting the sentiments of many and stirring emotions,” especially among revered Indian legends and sponsors.
"We unintentionally caused discomfort to our Indian Cricket Legends, who have brought so much glory to the country, and we ended up affecting the brands who supported us... We sincerely apologise again for hurting the sentiments and hope people will understand that all we ever wanted was to bring a few happy moments to the fans," a statement from WCL said.
