IND vs SA: Advantage India as 23 wickets fall on Day 1 of Cape Town Test

IND vs SA: As many as 23 wickets fell on Day 1 of the second Test match at the Newlands in Cape Town as India put themselves in the driver's seat to win the game and level the 2-Test series 1-1.

South Africa's decision to win the toss and bat first backfired, as Mohammed Siraj-led Indian pace attack wreaked havoc on the hosts. The figures of 6/15 from the 29-year-old saw South Africa getting bundled out for 55 - the lowest Test total by a team against India.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar also picked two wickets each for India. Wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne top-scored for his team with 15 runs. David Bedingham was the only other South Africa batter to score in double digits.

In reply, India scored 153 runs in 34.5 overs. They looked well set for a handy first-innings lead but their last six wickets fell with any addition to the total. Six India batter got out for ducks.

Virat Kohli top-scored with brisk 46 off 59 balls. Rohit sharma and Shubman Gill chipped in with 39 and 36 runs respectively. Pacers Kagiso Rabada, Lundi Ngidi and Nandre Burger picked three wickets apiece.

South Africa lost three more wickets in the second innings to finish at 62/3 at stumps on day one. South Africa still trail India by 36 runs and are relying heavily on Aiden Markram who went back unbeaten on 36 off 51.

Dean Elgar was dismissed by Mukesh Kumar in his final Test innings for 12 runs. The pacer picked Tony de Zorzi's wicket to finish with four wickets on the opening day. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Test debutant Tristan Stubbs (1).

With the surface expected to become quicker and more bowler-friendly, India would aim to wrap up South Africa's second innings at the earliest on Thursday.
