IND vs SA: Arshdeep Singh creates history, also joins elite list featuring Ravindra Jadeja in Johannesburg ODI

By MyKhel Staff

IND vs SA: Arshdeep Singh, who had gone wicketless in his first three ODI matches of his career, picked a five-wicket haul in the first ODI of the 3-match series against South Africa in Johannesburg on Sunday, December 17.

In the absence of senior pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, the left-arm pacer wreaked havoc and registered figures of 5/37 in 10 overs. He picked the wickets of openers Reeza Hendricks and Tony de Zorzi, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen and Andile Phehlukwayo.

IND vs SA: Arshdeep Singh first India pacer to pick five-fer against South Africa in an ODI match

The five-wicket haul is the first by a South Africa pacer in an ODI match against South Africa. He is also only the second India bowler after Yuzvendra Chahal to register an ODI five-wicket haul against South Africa in South Africa.

Overall, the 24-year-old is only the fourth India bowler to take five wickets in an ODI match against South Africa. Sunil Joshi picked five wickets for six runs in Nairobi in 1999. Yuzvendra Chahal (5/22 at Centurion in 2018) and Ravindra Jadeja (5/33 in Kolkata in 2022) are the other two bowlers.

The stellar performance from Arshdeep helped India bundle out South Africa for 116 in - their lowest ODI total at home. The previous lowest was also against India. South Africa got all-out for 118 in 2018 at Supersport Park, Centurion.

Avesh Khan was also on fire in the match. The right-arm pacer registered his best ODI bowling figures of 4/27 in eight overs. He picked the wickets of Aiden Markram, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj.

Sai Sudharsan scored an unbeaten fifty and Shreyas Iyer also chipped in with a hundred as India chased down the target in 16.4 overs with eight wickets in hand. The second ODI match will be played on Tuesday, December 19 in Gqeberha.
