IND vs SA: Dean Elgar likely to continue captaining in first Test, Temba Bavuma's hamstring injury resurfaces

By MyKhel Staff

IND vs SA: IND vs SA: Retiring cricketer Dean Elgar is likely to continue leading South Africa in the first Test match in Centurion after Temba Bavuma's hamstring injury resurfaced while fielding in the match.

Bavuma, who was rested from the preceding white-ball series against India, played with an injured hamstring in the World Cup 2023 semi-final which South Africa lost against Australia.

The 33-year-old injured himself during the 20th over of the Indian innings after he won the toss and invited Rohit Sharma's India to bat. Chasing the ball off a drive from Virat Kohli, Bavuma sprinted after the ball, but ended up pulling his hamstring just before making the successful stop.

He was attended by the team physio immediately. After a short discussion, Bavuma decided to leave the field and go for scans. Later, the commentators revealed that he had suffered a left hamstring strain. The opener will continue to undergo medical evaluations and a call on his further participation in the Boxing Day Test match will be taken later.

Dean Elgar, who is set to retire after the 2-Test series against India, took over the captaincy responsibility. Notably, Elgar was the South Africa captain who led his team to a 2-1 Test series win against India in 2021-22, after losing the first Test in Centurion by 113 runs.

India finished rain-marred Day 1 at 208/8 in 59 overs. KL Rahul top-scored for India with unbeaten 70, while Kagiso Rabada picked a five-wicket haul for his team.
