IND vs SA: India penalized for slow over rate, lose crucial WTC points

India's woes have compounded as Rohit Sharma's team has been penalized for a slow over rate in the first Test against South Africa.

It comes after their dismal defeat in Centurion as they lost by an innings and 32 runs. It is a huge setback in their quest for ICC World Test Championship glory.

India

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the team was found to be two overs behind the required rate, leading to a deduction of two vital points from their WTC points tally. Furthermore, each player has been handed a fine of 10% of their match earnings.

Match Referee Chris Broad handed down the penalties after determining that India failed to meet the target by two overs. In line with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel - which addresses minimum over-rate offenses - a 5% match fee fine is levied for every over a team is short.

India drops to 6th in WTC table

The repercussions of the over rate were felt immediately in the World Test Championship standings. India, previously positioned at No.5 with 16 points from three Tests, saw their points drop to 14 and their standing slip to 6th place. Their points percentage also suffered, dropping to 38.89% from 44.44%, significantly impacting their championship aspirations.

India made to the WTC Final of the previous two cycles, and will be hoping that this sanction doesn't prevent them from qualifying from another Final come summer 2025. India will have a chance to rectify their misdeeds when they play the 2nd Test against South Africa in Cape Town starting January 3.
