IND vs SA: Jasprit Bumrah goes past Ashwin as India's No. 1 Wicket-Taker in T20 World Cup, Arshdeep just behind

By MyKhel Staff

Jasprit Bumrah delivered a masterful performance in the India vs South Africa Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2026 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 22).

South Africa, opting to bat first, were restricted to 187/7 in their 20 overs, thanks largely to Bumrah's clinical spell. Bumrah finished with exceptional figures of 4-0-15-3 (economy 3.75), swinging the momentum decisively in India's favour.

Jasprit Bumrah bamboozling South Africa

He struck early in the powerplay, clean-bowling Quinton de Kock for 6 (7) with a lethal 137kph nip-backer that shattered the leg stump, extending his dominance over the left-hander (now 4 dismissals in limited encounters).

In his next over, he outfoxed Ryan Rickelton (7 off 7) with a clever slower delivery, inducing a top-edge catch to Shivam Dube at mid-off. This brought Bumrah level with R Ashwin for the most T20 World Cup wickets by an Indian (32) at that point.

He returned in the death overs, conceding just singles in his 17th over to curb David Miller's fireworks. Bumrah sealed his third wicket with a caught-and-bowled off Corbin Bosch in the 19th over to get his third wicket of the match.

Jasprit Bumrah becomes Top Wicket-Taker for India

With the excellent bowling performance, Jasprit Bumrah has now become the top wicket-taker for India in the T20 World Cups, going past Ravichandran Ashwin. Bumrah now has 33 wickets for India in the T20 World Cup, while his current team India compatriot Arshdeep Singh has 32 wickets to his name as well.

Most Wickets in T20 World Cup for India

Jasprit Bumrah - 33 (22 matches)

Ravichandran Ashwin - 32 (24 matches)

Arshdeep Singh - 32 (18 matches)

Hardik Pandya - 29 (29 matches)

Ravindra Jadeja - 22 (30 matches)

His variations-pace, yorkers, slower ones, and pinpoint accuracy once again proved why he's regarded as the game's premier death bowler and difference-maker. South Africa, who were threatening to score past 200 runs, were contained at 187 or 7 at the end of their full quota of overs, courtesy of an excellent late cameo from Tristan Stubbs, who scored 44 runs off 24 deliveries.
