IND-W vs SA-W: Shafali Verma on Friday, June 28, scripted history by breaking Australia all-rounder Annabel Sutherland's record for the fastest double hundred in the history of women's Test cricket. Sutherland scored a 248-ball double hundred against South Africa Women in Perth earlier this year.

The 20-year-old converted her maiden hundred into a double hundred on Day 1 of the only Test match against South Africa Women at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The Haryana-born cricketer took just 194 balls to reach the milestone. Unfortunately, she got run out three deliveries later Shafali Verma was unfortunately dismissed three deliveries later after Jemimah Rodrigues pushed a ball towards mid-on and tried to steal a quick single. A tired Shafali Verma was a bit slow in responding to the call from Rodrigues.

Shafali Verma only second India Women batter to hit Test double hundred

Shafali Verma is now only the second India Women cricketer after former captain Mithali Raj to slam a Test double hundred. Mithali scored a Test double ton against England in Taunton in August 2022. She scored 214 runs off 407 balls in the first innings. Overall, Shafali Verma is only the 10th batter in women's cricket history to hit a double hundred in Test cricket.

Fans on Twitter (now X) celebrated the milestone from Shafali Verma. Here are a few of the top reactions.

The blistering 197-run knock off 205 balls from Shafali Verma consisted of 23 fours and eight sixes. The right-hand opener was also involved in a record partnership with vice-captain Smriti Mandhana.

Shafali and Mandhaha's opening stand accounted for 292 runs off 312 balls. The stand is the highest-ever in Test history of the Indian women's cricket team. Mandhana scored 149 runs off 161 balls.

India Women and South Africa Women were involved in a 3-match ODI series ahead of the ongoing Test. They won the series by a 3-0 margin. The two teams will be playing a 3-match T20I series after the Test match.
