IND vs SA: Shubman Gill Ruled Out of Guwahati Test, Rishabh Pant to Captain India

By MyKhel Staff

India captain Shubman Gill is ruled out of the 2nd Test against South Africa, as per reports. Rishabh Pant is set to lead the Indian team in the final Test in Guwahati, starting from November 22.

Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. After playing a shot against spinner Simon Harmer, Gill experienced a whiplash-like neck spasm, clutching the back of his neck and struggling to turn his head.

He was stretchered off the field wearing a cervical collar and taken to a private hospital for detailed scans and MRI tests. Gill was admitted to the ICU at Woodlands Hospital, Kolkata, for observation and treatment, and was kept under close medical supervision overnight.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided updates confirming that Gill was responding well to the medical treatment and was discharged from the hospital the day after his admission. Despite his injury, he travelled with the Indian team to Guwahati for the second Test match scheduled to start on November 22, 2025.

Gill had only faced three balls in the Kolkata Test innings before retiring hurt and did not return to bat again in that innings. And now it is reported that the 25-year-old is out of contention to feature in the Guwahati Test.

Team India hasn't asked for any replacements so far for Gill, and it is likely that either Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal will be drafted into the playing 11 in Guwahati. The North-East city hosts its first-ever international Test match and all five days will start at 9 am IST. Also, the Tea will be taken before Lunch to accommodate maximum playing time due to sunset timings in that part of the country.
