IND vs SA, World Cup 2023: 'Thoda selfish bano Rohit Sharma!' fans urge Indian captain to convert good starts into big knocks

By MyKhel Staff

Rohit Sharma once again missed out an opportunity to play a big knock at the ICC World Cup 2023 as the Indian skipper got out after scoring a rapid 24-ball 40 to provide a quick start to India against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (November 5).

Fans were left disappointed once again as this was a repeat of Rohit Sharma's misfortunes at the ICC World Cup 2023 so far when he failed to capitalise on a good start while giving the team's run rate priority. We take a look at the fans' reaction on X, formerly Twitter, following the skipper's dismissal.

Rohit Sharma was the first Indian wicket to fall on the day as the opener was dismissed in the sixth over by Kagiso Rabada with 62 runs on the board. Shubman Gill, on the other hand, had an off day too as the youngster was cleaned bowled by Keshav Maharaj's peach of a delivery, which fell on the leg stump before taking the off-stump.

Shubman Gill scored a 23-ball 24 and was out with 93 runs on the board by the 11th over. Newly-in Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer struggled early on to deal with Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi but the high run-rate early in the innings by Rohit allowed Kohli and Shreyas Iyer to take their time to settle down.

The duo forged a 134-run partnership for the third wicket with both the batters firing half century in the process. Iyer was more comfortable in opening up his arm as the batter shot seven fours and two sixes during a 77-run knock, which came off 87 balls.

The partnership was ended by Lungi Ngidi in the 37th over when Shreyas miscued a slow delivery to Aiden Markram in the mid-on region for a regulation catch. At the time of writing, Virat Kohli (74*) was charging towards his 49th century with KL Rahul back him at the other end.
