IND vs SL: Aakash Chopra Weighs in on Jaiswal-Bhogle Debate Following Asitha Fernando Clash

The on-field confrontation between Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando during the second Test in Colombo continues to draw reactions from the cricketing fraternity.

Former India batter Aakash Chopra is the latest to offer his perspective, highlighting a clear generational divide in how players handle on-field provocations.

The incident unfolded on the opening day of the Test match when Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45. The dismissal occurred immediately after the Indian batter had struck the fast bowler for three consecutive boundaries. While walking back to the pavilion, Jaiswal turned around to confront Fernando, leading to a heated exchange of words. The situation escalated when Fernando moved his head toward the Indian opener, prompting Jaiswal to lean in, resulting in physical, head-to-head contact.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) quickly intervened, handing both players a 25 percent match fee fine and one demerit point for breaching the code of conduct regarding inappropriate physical contact. Both players admitted to the offense and accepted the sanctions from match referee Andy Pycroft.

On his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra weighed in on the contrasting viewpoints regarding the controversy, suggesting that both Harsha Bhogle and the young batter might have a valid point.

"Harsha Bhogle comes from an old-school philosophy of cricket," Chopra explained. "He felt that Yashasvi Jaiswal got too close to Asitha Fernando and, in a heated moment like that, the right thing to do is to simply walk away. But Jaiswal chose to react. Now I'm wondering: who is right? Can both of them be right?".

Chopra pointed out that Jaiswal has been the target of persistent banter and send-offs throughout the series, some of which have crossed the line. He emphasized that the current generation of cricketers is much less likely to absorb verbal abuse without retaliating.

"There is constant banter and plenty of send-offs aimed at Jaiswal, and sometimes it crosses the line and goes below the belt," Chopra added.

"Jaiswal, though, is someone who likes to give it back and take on the challenge. This is a new way of doing things," the former India player concluded.
