IND vs SL: Arshdeep Singh Memes Flood After Pacer Makes Failed Attempt to 'Finish Off in Style' in 1st ODI

By MyKhel Staff

Arshdeep Singh memes flood on social media after the pacer's failed attempt to finish off in style when India needed 1 run to win from 14 balls in the first ODI against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday (August 2).

With just 1 run for victory and 1 wicket in hand, Arshdeep was trapped LBW by Charith Asalanka in the penultimate delivery of the 48th over as India settled for a tie in the three-match series opener.

Fans trolled Arshdeep following the left-arm pacer's careless act as he aimed for a big shot rather than look for a single, which was the requirement to win the match. The pacer's failed to make any connection with the slog and was trapped in front of the stumps LBW for a golden duck.

Here are some of the memes from social media as fans compared his attempt at a big hieve to the memorable MS Dhoni six in the 2011 World Cup final.

Some fans even compared Arshdeep Singh to the legendary South African batter AB de Villiers, labelling the left-arm seamer as "Arshdeep Singh Devilliers", while some users compared the incident to Shannon Gabriel's with West Indies in a Test match.

While a few fans came in defence of Arshdeep, saying the batting unit failed, as some fans picturized the reaction of head coach Gautam Gambhir in the dressing room after the match.

Chasing 231, India got off to a brilliant start with openers Rohit Sharma (58 off 47 balls) and Shubman Gill (16 off 35 balls) sharing a 75-run stand for the first wicket. Virat Kohli (24 off 32 balls) and Shreyas Iyer (24 off 23 balls) also made contributions with the bat.

However, India were suddenly reduced to half the side following the dismissal of Kohli and Iyer. KL Rahul and Axar Patel steadied ship to take India closer to the target, but the duo fell in quick succession, leaving the lower order exposed to Sri Lanka's spin.

India was 189/6 in 39.4 overs. In the next over, skipper Asalanka removed Axar for 33 in 57 balls, with two fours and a six. With help of a fine six from Shivam Dube, India reached the 200-run mark in 41.4 overs.

Dube and Kuldeep took India to the brink of a win, but Asalanka trapped Dube lbw for 25 in 24 balls, with a four and two sixes. India was left with just one wicket and one run to get in 14 balls.

Arshdeep was trapped in front of the stumps by Asalanka on the first ball, with the match ending in a tie. Asalanka (3/30) and Hasaranga (3/58) were the pick of the bowlers for SL.
