Dunith Wellalage on Tuesday became the 11th Sri Lankan bowler to take five wickets against India during the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match -- India vs Sri Lanka -- at the R Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday (September 12).
Dunith Wellalage dismissed Rohit Sharma (53 runs), Virat Kohli (3), Shubman Gill (19), KL Rahul (39), and Hardik Pandya (5) as India reached 193/9 (47 overs) before rain halted play. The pitch assisted spin bowlers as part-time bowler Charith Asalanka took four of the remaining wickets to clean up the Indian tail.

20-year-old Dunith Wellalage, a left-arm off-spinner, joins the elite list that consists of Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Ajantha Mendis, among other big names. Pacer Graeme Labrooy was the first Sri Lankan bowler to take a fifer against India back in 1987 in Baroda during a five-match ODI series.
Muttiah Muralitharan's 7/30 in 2008 in Karachi during the tri-nation Coca-Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah remains the best bowling figure by a Sri Lankan bowler against India. Akila Dhananjaya's 6/54 in 2017 during a five-match home series is the second on the list.
