Colombo, Jul 27: The opening T20I clash between India and Sri Lanka showcased an exhilarating performance by Matheesha Pathirana, as he proved to be a game-changer by dismissing key Indian players.
The Chennai Super Kings' young pacer - known as Baby Malinga for his 'slingy' bowling action - stole the show with his fiery spell, showcasing his ability to dismantle a formidable batting line-up featuring some of the biggest names in international cricket, as well as the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Matheesha Pathirana's impact was felt as he picked up crucial wickets at pivotal moments. His spell began with the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav, who was in scintillating form, having already scored a quickfire 58 off just 26 balls.
Pathirana delivered a full and fast delivery, catching Suryakumar off guard. The Indian captain shuffled across to whip the ball but missed, resulting in an LBW decision that left India at 146-2.
Pathirana's momentum continued as he targeted the Indian middle-order. Hardik Pandya, known for his explosive batting, became Pathirana's next victim. Pandya managed to score 9 off 10 balls before facing a searing yorker at 151 kmph from Pathirana. The delivery was too quick for Pandya, flicking his pad and crashing into the stumps, showcasing Pathirana's exceptional pace and precision.
The young bowler's prowess didn't stop there. Riyan Parag, another IPL talent, fell prey to Pathirana's skilful bowling. Parag attempted to whip a full delivery but was beaten by the pace and the ball tailed back into him, resulting in another LBW decision. Parag's brief innings ended at 7 runs, and India's score stood at 192-4, with Pathirana playing a significant role in restricting their progress.
Rishabh Pant, known for his aggressive batting, seemed like a potential threat to Sri Lanka's bowling attack. However, Pathirana had other plans. Pant had already smashed 49 off 33 balls, including six boundaries and one six, when Pathirana delivered a slower ball that deceived Pant.
The Indian wicketkeeper-batsman attempted a slog but was too early into the shot, resulting in the ball rattling his off-stump. This wicket marked Pathirana's fourth of the match, emphasizing his capability to handle pressure and deliver when it mattered most.
In addition to these wickets, Pathirana's overall bowling figures were impressive. He finished with figures of 4-0-40-4, demonstrating his effectiveness in the death overs. His ability to mix up his deliveries, combining pace with slower balls, kept the Indian batsmen guessing and disrupted their rhythm.
The match concluded with India scoring 213, largely due to Axar Patel's finishing touch with a six off Asitha Fernando. However, Pathirana's spell was a key highlight, as his wickets of IPL stars Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and Riyan Parag showcased his talent and potential as a rising star in Sri Lankan cricket.
