IND vs SL: No Super Over in 1st ODI after Tie, did Umpires and Match Officials make a mistake?

The ongoing series between India and Sri Lanka has come under scrutiny after a potential official howler in the 1st ODI on Friday (August 2).

In the first match in Colombo, India could only manage a tie. After restricting Sri Lanka for 230 runs, team India failed to chase the target. Despite being in the driver's seat for most of the match, India was also bowled out for 230 runs.

IND vs SL

Shivam Dube and Arshdeep Singh couldn't score a solitary run as the team only managed a tie despite being in winnable territories. As the match concluded, the umpires called it as a tie.

But questions have arisen as to why any Super Over was not conducted. This was the 2nd consecutive tie across formats for these two teams. Earlier, it was Sri Lanka who managed a tie in the 3rd T20I match while chasing and then lost in the Super Over. But the umpires deciding not to play the Super Over has raised questions.

ICC Law indicates ODI Super Over

As per the ICC's rulebook, which was amended in December 2023, an ODI match ending in a tie needs to be followed with Super Over. As per the ICC rule 16.3.1.1, which deals with tied matches along with playing conditions, a tied ODI match needs to find a conclusion through Super Over till a winner is found.

"If the teams' scores are equal after both innings have been completed (if applicable under DLS -see clause 16.4), then a Super Over shall be played. If the Super Over is a tie, then unless exceptional circumstances arise (see paragraph 25 of Appendix G), subsequent Super Overs shall be played until there is a winner. Should it not be possible to play or to complete the Super Overs needed to determine a winner, the match shall be tied," it says.

Did the Match Officials make a Mistake?

It is unknown whether the officials changed the playing conditions rule for the three-match series and there is no confirmation of a change either. The match had ample time to be completed as there were neither rain or any immediate threat of natural calamity. Also the time when the match ended could have permitted another two overs of Super Over to come to a conclusion. Although no explanation has come from the officials' side, it seems to be a horrendous mistake from the officials.
