'This hurts more than break up': Fans heartbroken after Virat Kohli misses out on record century during India vs Sri Lanka at ICC World Cup 2023

By MyKhel Staff

Virat Kohli missed out on matching Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record of 49 centuries yet again as the star Indian batter got out just 12 runs short of his milestone during the India vs Sri Lanka match at the ICC World Cup 2023. Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their feelings as most of them were left without words.

Virat Kohli has been going through a purple patch once again and his form helped him notch up multiple centuries this season since he ended the long wait with a ton against Afghanistan last year. However, matching an all-time record of the legendary icon has been a task too steep for the former Indian captain.

Virat Kohli scored 88 runs in 94 balls, smashing 11 fours, while adding 189 runs for the second wicket with Shubman Gill (92) to set India up for the big total. Gill also missed out on a century by eight runs as he smashed 11 fours and two sixes. This was the third time this World Cup that Virat Kohli missed a century up close as he got out for 85 against Australia and 95 against New Zealand in Dharamshala.

India were asked to bat first after Sri Lanka won the toss at the Wankhede Stadium, where India won the ICC World Cup final back in 2011. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, leading India for the first time in a World Cup match at his childhood venue, said, "Would have batted first.

"Obviously, some assistance to start with but under lights there will be good assistance for our pacers. Great honour, a great moment to lead the team. It is important for us to not get carried away by the performances we put in. Same team as the last game."
