India registered a commanding 72-run win over Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, posting 256/4 - the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history - to keep their semi-final hopes alive in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
Abhishek Sharma's 55 off 30 balls set the tone, Hardik Pandya smashed an unbeaten 50 off 23, and Tilak Varma added a blistering 44* off 16 as India hammered 17 sixes. But while the batters dazzled, Zimbabwe's Brian Bennett responded with a fighting unbeaten 97, helping his side reach 184/6 and narrowing the margin of defeat.

And that's where fans weren't entirely satisfied.
"Don't take this lightly Team India played today against Zimbabwe a bit casually. Hypothetically, if India vs West Indies in Kolkata gets washed out, the NRR could cost us the game. Surya Kumar Yadav can't do everything this is the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, not street cricket!"
Another supporter calculated the implications bluntly: "If India had managed to restrict Zimbabwe to 128, even a rain washout against WI would have taken to Semis. Out of the difference of 56 runs, 46 are given by Dubey only. Now, a win has to be there."
Questions were also raised about India's bowling strategy and use of resources in the second innings. "I guess India is a bit casual and lacking the killer instinct under Surya.... They should have used the main bowlers and tried to wrap up Zimbabwe at small total..... In case India WI match gets washed out, run rate will be key again."
Some criticism turned tactical, even sarcastic: "I think SKY wanted bennett to score century today 🤷♂️ why else would you give Shivam Dube an over. A medium pace bowler in a chennai pitch."
Despite the comfortable victory, the reaction highlights the razor-thin margins at this stage of the tournament. India did the hard part with the bat. But with net run-rate potentially deciding qualification, fans believe the job wasn't fully finished.
