IND vs ZIM: Why are India and Zimbabwe Players Wearing Black Arm Bands Today in Harare?

India are up against Zimbabwe in the 2nd T20I of the three-match series at the Harare Sports Club today (Saturday, July 25).

As the two teams lock horns, both teams' players are wearing black armbands, which were seen during the toss. Both teams are paying homage to an ex-Zimbabwe administrator who passed away.

Why India, Zimbabwe Players Wearing Black Armbands?

Zimbabwe Cricket vice-chairman Sylvester Matshaka passed away, prompting tributes from across the cricketing fraternity. Matshaka was a respected cricket administrator who served as the deputy to Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani and played a key role in the governance and development of the sport in the country.

He was re-elected as vice-chairman in 2023 and was involved in several administrative initiatives aimed at strengthening Zimbabwean cricket ahead of major international events, including the 2027 ODI World Cup co-hosting preparations. Players from both Zimbabwe and India wore black armbands during the second T20I in Harare on Saturday as a mark of respect following his death.

BCCI also confirmed the homage on social media ahead of the match.

"#TeamIndia and Zimbabwe players are wearing black armbands to pay their respects to the Zimbabwe Cricket Vice-chairman Sylvester Matshaka, who passed away last night," a post from BCCI wrote.

Speaking about the match, Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bowl first. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scored a quickfire 20 off 9 balls but Ishan Kishan has been the star of the show. The southpaw scored 81 off just 44 deliveries as India are en route to a big score. Tilak Varma has also racked up a fifty in just 24 balls as India are currently 196/4 in 18 overs. Yash Thakur has made his international debut, replacing Ashok Sharma, who debuted in the last match.
