In a significant move, 17-year-old Shabnam Shakil, the Under-19 World Cup-winning pacer, has earned her maiden call-up to the Indian senior squad. This development comes as part of the strategic workload management for India's frontline fast bowlers during the ongoing multi-format series against South Africa.
Shakil's inclusion addresses the need for additional pace options, especially with the demands of a packed schedule. The series began with a three-match ODI set, the first of which saw Pooja Vastrakar and Renuka Thakur leading the new-ball attack in Bengaluru.

However, Vastrakar's participation was under a cloud of uncertainty due to a shoulder niggle that required rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
In the second ODI, with Renuka Thakur rested-announced by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur at the toss-Arundhati Reddy received her maiden ODI cap. Thakur's absence was noted, but she was seen undergoing a fitness test under the watchful eye of strength and conditioning coach Anand Date, hinting at cautious management of her workload.
Looking ahead, the one-off Test match in Chennai already sees the inclusion of Meghna Singh as a fourth pace option. Following the Test, Meghna Singh will make way for pace-bowling allrounder Amanjot Kaur for the three-match T20I series, further indicating a rotation policy to keep the bowlers fresh and fit.
Shakil's rise to the senior team comes after her notable performances. Despite limited playtime in the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) season with Gujarat Giants, Shakil showcased her potential in the 2024 season by picking up four wickets in four games with an economy rate of 7.
Her recent involvement in a pacers-specific camp and participation in the Board President's XI warm-up match against the South Africans-though cut short by rain-underscored her readiness for the senior team. As India navigates the series against South Africa, the addition of Shakil could be a pivotal factor in maintaining their pace attack's efficacy and longevity.
