India captain MS Dhoni sets world record in 1st T20I in USA

Fort Lauderdale (USA), Aug 27: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today (August 27) set a world record when he led the team against West Indies in the 1st Twenty20 International here.

The 35-year-old Dhoni, who already owns several records in international cricket, added one more to his glittering career, at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill (Florida).

On Saturday, he captained India in a record 325th game (most by a player in history), across all three formats, to break Australian skipper Ricky Ponting's mark.

Today, Dhoni was leading India in 71st T20I. And he has already captained the side in 60 Tests and 194 One Day Internationals. Dhoni was appointed India skipper in 2007.

It was a historic moment on Saturday as India played for the first time in USA and Dhoni celebrated with another huge achievement. Today also saw the new partnership of Dhoni and coach Anil Kumble.

In June this year, Dhoni had matched Ponting's record when he led India against Zimbabwe in the 3rd and final T20I in Harare.

Dhoni, who has retired from Tests, continues to play limited overs cricket. He is the to have won all 3 ICC trophies (World T20 2007, World Cup 2011 and Champions Trophy 2013).

Before the match, Dhoni had said it was a "good start" to have a T20I series in USA. "As far as effort is concerned, I always felt the USA was big market, a lot of sub-continent people stay here, not only Indians. I feel it is a good start. The timings (broadcast) are also good. It feels good to be here. Earlier, people living in US used to travel to the the West Indies to support us but now they have the opportunity to catch the action here itself," he said on Friday (August 26).
