Champions Trophy 2025: Karun Nair and Mohd Siraj Omissions, Bumrah-Kuldeep Fitness Headline Team India Selection Meeting at Wankhede

Mumbai, Jan 18: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the much-anticipated 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on Saturday, January 19. The squad announcement, held at the Wankhede Stadium also included the team for the ODI series against England preceding the marquee event.

While the spotlight is on India's core lineup, sources informed myKhel that the omissions of Karun Nair and Mohammed Siraj dominated the discussions between the selectors, captain and coach. During the meeting, the stakeholders also pondered Jasprit Bumrah's fitness, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill's form, and the decision to appoint Gill as the vice-captain.

'Karun Nair's name did come up for discussion'

Karun Nair's scintillating performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy were a hot topic during the selection meeting. Despite being in prime form and making a strong case for a middle-order slot, Nair was overlooked.

Sources close to the selection meeting revealed that his name did come up for discussion, with one selector advocating for his inclusion.

"Karun Nair's excellent form certainly sparked significant discussion among selectors when they met in Mumbai to finalise the England series and the Champions Trophy squad. Nair, known for his devastating performances, had done enough to merit a place in the team. A selector raised his name during the meeting, which led to extended discussions about his inclusion," sources informed.

However, the final decision seems to have leaned towards Shreyas Iyer, who also makes his comeback after consistently performing in the domestic circuit. Nair's exclusion, however, raises questions about the emphasis placed on domestic performances versus established names in the national setup.

Mohammed Siraj Omission

Equally surprising was the exclusion of pacer Mohammed Siraj, who has been a pivotal figure in India's pace attack across formats in recent years. Sources revealed that Siraj's exclusion from the 15-member squad came after extensive deliberation. His omission wasn't a straightforward decision, with intense discussions revolving around various factors.

Mohammed Shami, making a comeback after more than a year, seemed to be an obvious choice for the tournament. But there is still suspense over the availability of Japsrit Bumrah - who suffered the injury during the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. The ongoing concern over the star pacer's full recovery was also discussed during the meeting. Bumrah will therefore be missing the England ODIs at home, while young Delhi pacer Harshit Rana has been picked in his stead.

With Hardik Pandya providing an additional pace-bowling option, the selectors leaned towards variety in the attack by opting for the left-arm pace of Arshdeep Singh.

Shubman Gill's Promotion to Vice-Captaincy

Another significant talking point was Shubman Gill's promotion to vice-captaincy. Despite his recent dip in form, the selectors and management decided to back the young opener, signalling their confidence in his leadership potential.

In the wicketkeeping department, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul were the preferred choices, leaving Sanju Samson out of the reckoning. While Samson has shown flashes of brilliance, the selectors favoured Pant's match-winning ability and Rahul's experience in pressure situations. Pant, who has been under scrutiny for his inconsistency, will aim to justify the faith shown in him.

Spin Department Bolstered

India's spin attack will feature Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar. Jadeja's all-around capabilities make him a crucial cog in the wheel, while Kuldeep's wrist spin adds variety. Axar and Sundar, with their dual abilities, bring balance and depth to the squad.

Kuldeep's fitness and form were reportedly another topic of discussion during the meeting, further highlighting the significance of spin in India's plans for the UAE conditions.

"Other Key topics included Kuldeep Yadav's fitness, the ongoing concerns over Jasprit Bumrah's full recovery, Rishabh Pant's form, and the decision to back Shubman Gill as vice-captain. Each of these aspects was thoroughly debated before the final squad was finalized," sources added further.

Press Briefing Delayed Amid Intense Deliberations

The press conference, initially scheduled for 12:30 PM, was delayed by over two hours, underscoring the depth and complexity of the selection process. During this time, Indian coach Gautam Gambhir shared his insights, adding to the intrigue surrounding the squad announcement.

"During the wait, Indian coach Gautam Gambhir also voiced his thoughts, with other key figures joining the discussion as well. The delay seemed to indicate the importance and depth of the conversations taking place behind the scenes," sources revealed.

Whether coach Gambhir attended the meeting physically isn't yet known but the former India cricketer did speak at length about the team's performance. However, it is not known if he spoke during team selection discussions or during a team review meeting.
