India Cricket Schedule after 2027 ODI World Cup: Three Series Confirmed, ODI may return to Tri-Series

India's international calendar could undergo a significant change after the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the ICC and Full Members looking at ways to make room for more T20Is while giving greater context to bilateral ODIs.

The next Future Tours Programme is still being finalised, but several major India commitments are understood to be taking shape for the 2027-31 cycle.

The Indian team is expected to be at the centre of major involvements across the next few years. The big three of world cricket, England, Australia and India, will have significant roles and involvements in the upcoming FTP agenda.

India set for England test

One of the confirmed major commitments will be England's tour of India for a Test series in early 2028. The two teams are also expected to meet in England in 2029, continuing the regular Test rivalry between the sides. The broader 2027-31 calendar is being structured around major ICC events and the World Test Championship.

The 2028 series will also come in a particularly busy year, with cricket scheduled to feature at the Los Angeles Olympics in July. The men's Olympic tournament is expected to be a week-long T20 competition.

South Africa to host India after 2027 World Cup

India are also expected to travel to South Africa immediately after the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October-November. The exact composition of India's tour is yet to be finalised, but the series is among the major commitments being discussed for the next cycle.

Will ODI cricket get a new push?

The growing number of T20Is is one of the biggest challenges facing the international calendar. The T20 World Cup is held every two years, compared with the four-year ODI World Cup cycle, making T20 cricket the ICC's major growth vehicle.

However, the ODI format is not expected to disappear. Instead, there is growing discussion around making bilateral ODIs more meaningful. One proposal gaining attention is the return of tri-series and quadrangular tournaments, concepts that were regular features of international cricket during the 1990s and early 2000s.

The 2027-31 FTP is not yet final, but the India-England and India-South Africa commitments offer an early glimpse of what could be a heavily packed international calendar.
