India get New Coach Days before Afghanistan Test as Gautam Gambhir adds New Staff
Former India player Sairaj Bahutule has joined team India's coaching contingent ahead of the one-off Test series against Afghanistan.
The 53-year-old Bahutule, who played two Tests and eight ODIs for India between 2001 and 2003, brings a wealth of experience from domestic cricket and coaching.

A prolific wicket-taker for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy - with over 600 first-class wickets - he has earned a reputation as one of India's finest spin minds. His appointment fills a crucial void in the support staff under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Bahutule was serving as spin-bowling coach for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2026 season and is expected to part ways with the franchise to take up the national role for the next two years. BCCI sources confirmed that Gambhir and senior officials approached him after identifying the need for a dedicated specialist to nurture India's young spinners.
The move comes at a pivotal time, with India hosting Afghanistan in a high-stakes Test that will also serve as preparation for future challenges. Bahutule's technical expertise and understanding of Indian conditions are expected to play a key role in sharpening the spin attack.
India's Current Coaching Staff
The current support staff includes batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, fast-bowling coach Morne Morkel, fielding coach T Dilip, and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. Bahutule's integration completes a well-rounded unit.
Why has Sairaj Bahutule been Roped In?
The primary reason behind Sairaj Bahutule's appointment as India's spin-bowling coach is the clear need for a dedicated, experienced specialist to guide the team's spinners.
India's support staff under head coach Gautam Gambhir previously lacked a full-time spin-bowling coach. With the retirement of stalwarts like Ravichandran Ashwin, the BCCI and Gambhir identified this gap and proactively approached Bahutule. It is likely that Bahutule's move can be made permanent if it yields positive results. India will take on Afghanistan in a 3-match ODI series following the Test, and then they travel to England and Ireland for limited overs series as well.
