With today's (December 7) success, India moved up 2 places to 2nd in the ICC rankings. India replaced Australia as the number 2 side in the world. South Africa, despite the series loss, continue to be on top.
The hosts won in Mohali (1st Test), Nagpur (3rd Test) and on Sunday in Delhi (4th Test) for 3-0 scoreline against the visiting South Africans. The 2nd Test was drawn in Bengaluru after no play was possible on 4 days due to rain.
Before the start of the series, India were ranked 5th and last month moved to 4th following Pakistan's victory over England in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
After 3-0 win, India gained 10 rating points (from 100 to 110) while South Africa lost 11 (from 125 to 114).
It has been a remarkable turnround for India in the Test rankings after hitting a new low to 7th in January this year. In 11 months, they have moved from 7th to 2nd, under Kohli's leadership.
The win against South Africa is the 2nd for captain Kohli after a historic 2-1 triumph in Sri Lanka in September this year.
