India likely to be stranded in Barbados after T20 World Cup win, return delayed

India secured a magnificent T20 World Cup victory after beating South Africa in the final on Saturday (June 29).

Rohit Sharma and his men ended the wait of 11 years for their ICC trophy in Barbados, but their triumphant return is supposed to be delayed.

The Indian cricket team's return to their homeland might be delayed due to Hurricane Beryl, which is expected to make landfall in Barbados by Monday morning. The team is currently in Barbados and is likely to stay there till Monday. Beryl, a category 3 storm, could have devastating consequences when it hits the island nation.

Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season and has intensified into a "very dangerous" Category 3 storm as it approaches Barbados. The National Hurricane Center predicts that Beryl will become an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane when it reaches the Windward Islands by late Sunday or early Monday. This early arrival of the season's first hurricane is unusual, as the average date for the first hurricane is August 11.

At the time of writing, Beryl was over 400 kilometres away from Barbados, with wind speeds nearing 200 kmph. The weather centre stated that "the centre of Beryl is expected to move across the Windward Islands Monday morning and across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea late Monday through Wednesday."

India recorded a sublime victory and won the tournament after defeating the Proteas by 7 runs. BCCI has already announced a whopping prize money of Rs 125 crore for the Indian team. After their World Cup victory, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja also announced their retirement from T20 internationals for India.
