The last time India and South Africa played an ODI series in India was back in 2023, just before the ODI World Cup. India won the series 2-1 and Mohammed Siraj was named as player of the series. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were both absent in that ODI series as India was led by Shikhar Dhawan.
The squad is yet to be named, but we can expect the announcement soon. India have finished Day 2 in Guwahati at 9 for no loss in reply to South Africa's 489 in their first innings.

5th T20I: December 19, 2025 - Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
We can expect BCCI to announce the ODI and T20I squad anytime now. The 3-match ODI and 5-match T20I series will be India's final act in this calendar year. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli are expected to play, while India is set to witness a new ODI captain for the South Africa series. All unfolds soon!
The Indian team has won the inaugural Blind T20 Women's World Cup Title. Kudos to all those warriors!

Hardik Pandya is nursing his injury and is yet to return to full fitness. The India all-rounder is a key part of ODI and T20Is, but will play no part in the South Africa series. He is likely to feature for Baroda in the domestic tournaments and New Zealand series next year remains a possible return date for him.

Tilak Varma has been excellent in the T20I format for India. He started his rich vein of form last year in South Africa and has continued it, most recently in the Asia Cup final. Will that be enough to get an ODI call-up as well? Remains a tricky question, but likely not.

Ravindra Jadeja was not included in the Australia ODI series, but the left-arm spinner is deemed in the selectors' plans. It is to be seen if Jadeja is picked for the South Africa ODI series, and if he is not, this may well be curtains for him in the 50-over format.
South Africa have bundled out for 489 runs in the 1st innings on Day 2 of the Guwahati Test. With around 40 minutes left to the day's play, the squad announcement looks imminent.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma are set to return in the ODIs for this series. It may look astonishing, but they will be playing their first international match on Indian soil in this calendar year since January against England.
At least in the ODI front, they can definitely hand some opportunities to some of the fringe players. When it comes to the T20I series, the Indian team management has already pinpointed their 17-20 players pool for the T20I World Cup, hence they are only interested in keeping the core and make minimal changes.
Jasprit Bumrah may be rested for the ODI series as he was in Australia. The Indian pace star is playing both Tests against the Proteas, which signals he may again return in the T20I series.
Interestingly, if the aforementioned T20I team (check last post) is picked for the South Africa series, all of the players are currently retained by their respective IPL teams ahead of the IPL 2026 auction except one, which is Sanju Samson, who moved to Chennai Super Kings from Rajasthan Royals.
India likely T20I Squad vs South Africa
Suryakumar Yadav (c), Sai Sudharsan, Sanju Samson (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Rinku Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Tilak Varma, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav
It is likely to be an identical squad for India in the T20I series against South Africa, with the only possible exclusion being Shubman Gill. In Gill's place, Sai Sudharsan or Ruturaj Gaikwad can come in. Yashasvi Jaiswal can also be tried in the T20 format as the southpaw has seen his chances limited. Abhishek Sharma is certain, and team management can also try out Sanju Samson at the top.
The BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, along with the other selectors, are currently in Guwahati attending the India vs South Africa match. It is likely that the team will be announced after the conclusion of the day's play.
In the last ODI series, India faced England in a 3-match series ahead of Champions Trophy 2025. The Men in Blue ended as 3-0 winners.
As per a report by Revsportz, Shubman Gill's injury is not as serious as it seems and it's not a 'neck injury'. Neck spasms generally takes 2 days and if not recovered then it might go upto 15-20 days to recover. As a result, Gill has reportedly taken an injection to speed up the recovery. But report suggests that he could be out of the T20I series and might not return till Jan, 2026.
Rohit Sharma is not completely out of the captaincy conversation for the upcoming series. The veteran opener, who guided India to the Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup titles, was reportedly keen to continue leading the team before the BCCI opted to hand the role to Shubman Gill. With Gill now injured, a temporary return to captaincy for Rohit in the South Africa ODIs remains a realistic possibility.
The Indian team will fly to Ranchi from Guwahati. The players not part of the Test series will be assembling in Ranchi by November 27, as the Indian team is expected to have a couple of practice sessions before the 1st ODI at the Jharkhand capital.
With both Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer unavailable, India are expected to inject new options into their ODI lineup. Rishabh Pant is poised for a comeback, while the remaining vacancy has sparked a close selection battle between Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad as per a report by RevSportz.
Varun Chakravarthy had an outstanding outing with India in the Champions Trophy, but hasn't played an ODI since then. The KKR spinner hasn't got a chance on the 50-over format, but has been a regular in T20I cricket for the upcoming South Africa series. Varun is set to be picked for the T20 series, but he may well be omitted again in the ODIs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is set to get his opportunity as an opener in the South Africa ODI series. The southpaw had to sit out in Australia but Shubman Gill's injury has opened up a place for him. Ruturaj Gaikwad, if picked in the ODI squad, may be included as a backup only. Elsewhere, Tilak Varma and Sai Sudharsan are also strong contenders.

India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill may be sidelined for a couple of months after scans revealed his neck injury is more serious than initially believed. Gill aggravated the issue while batting in the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, where he retired hurt after just three balls and was later taken to a hospital for observation.
Fresh reports suggest the injury could be nerve-related, and he has already received an injection to help ease the discomfort. As a result, Gill is now expected to miss the rest of 2025 as he undergoes further treatment and recovery.

In the ODIs, Sanju Samson has scored 238 runs at an average of 119 against South Africa, with 1 century and 1 fifty in five innings. In the T20Is, Samson has an average of 72 against the Proteas.
Samson's last ODI appearance came way back in 2023, and despite his excellent form against South Africa, he is likely to remain sidelined for the ODI series.
Jitesh Sharma is set to be picked in the T20I squad. He had a poor outing in the recent Asia Cup Rising Stars series, especially in the semifinal against Bangladesh where his decision to not promote Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the Super Over has been hugely criticized. But for now, Jitesh and Sanju Samson may be picked for T20s, even if Rishabh Pant is available.
KL Rahul is likely to be named as captain for the South Africa series, and Rishabh Pant may deputize him. The likes of Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna are set to return while Jasprit Bumrah may sit the ODI series out, as he did in Australia tour as well.
India Probable ODI Squad
KL Rahul (captain, wicketkeeper), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper).
With crucial players like Shubman Gill sidelined by injury and Hardik Pandya unavailable for fitness reasons, India will face the challenge of recalibrating their lineup while retaining their competitive edge. Leadership will likely see KL Rahul stepping up as captain, with the experienced Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli anchoring the batting lineup. This creates a scenario where the balance of youth and experience will play a defining role in India's approach.
This series will test the bench strength of the Indian squad, with young players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad expected to seize the opportunity to cement their places in the team. The absence of Shubman Gill opens a spot likely to be filled by these promising youngsters, bringing fresh energy and unpredictability to the batting order. Similarly, the spin department, led by Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, alongside the pace attack featuring Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh, will be critical in exploiting the varied pitches across Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam.
South Africa, known for their fighting spirit and pace battery, will present a stern challenge, making this series an excellent platform for India to experiment with combinations and strategies ahead of bigger tournaments. The venues are expected to offer balanced conditions favoring both batsmen and bowlers, which could lead to competitive, high-scoring matches. With experienced stalwarts like KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma complemented by the hunger and vigour of younger players, India's ODI squad looks well-equipped to navigate this series successfully, despite key absences.
