India skittled out for 79 vs NZ, their lowest in T20 World Cup

Nagpur, March 16: Favourites India lost their opening match in the ingoing T20 World Cup against New Zealand at the VCA Stadium here on Wednesday (March 15) by 47 runs.

Chasing 127 to win, the Indian batsmen failed to get their act together and collapsed for just 79, their lowest total in the T20 World Cup. Overall, it's the seventh lowest score in T20 World Cup.

Of those seven occasions, five non-Test-playing countries were at the receiving end. Among the Test-playing sides, only New Zealand (60 all out against Sri Lanka in 2014) feature among the seven lowest scores in World T20. [Dhoni blames batsmen for defeat]

The lowest is 39 by the Netherlands against Sri Lanka in the 2014 edition, which was played in Bangladesh.

India's lowest-ever in T20 is 74

India's lowest total in T20 is, however, 74 which was scored against Australia in Melbourne in January 2008. India's previous lowest in a T20 World Cup was 118 for the loss of 8 wickets in the 2009 edition played in England.

For New Zealand, it was the third biggest victory in a T20 World Cup and the seventh overall. The Kiwis, who also beat India in the 2007 World Cup, are yet to lose in a T20 match against the Indians.
