India Pulls Out of Asia Cup 2025 Amid Indo-Pak Political Tensions; ACC Leadership Under Scrutiny: Report

In a major development that could have far-reaching consequences for Asian cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly communicated to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) its decision to pull out of the Asia Cup 2025.

The move, attributed to escalating political tensions between India and Pakistan, raises serious doubts over the future of the tournament.

As per a report in The Indian Express, the BCCI has also withdrawn from the Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2025, which is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka next month. The decision comes amidst growing discomfort in India over the ACC's leadership, currently headed by Pakistan's Federal Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi.

Sources within the BCCI have cited national sentiment and a conflict of interest as the key reasons for distancing itself from events overseen by a Pakistani official. "The Indian team can't play in a tournament that is organised by the ACC whose chief is a Pakistan minister. That's the sentiment of the nation. We've verbally communicated our withdrawal and our future participation in ACC events is also under review," the board reportedly stated.

This diplomatic fallout coincides with heightened tensions between the two nations following Operation Sindoor - a recent military operation launched by India in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation to a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which claimed 26 civilian lives.

India's decision to withdraw deals a potential blow to both the PCB and the ACC, especially since India were set to defend their Asia Cup title. The tournament, scheduled in T20 format for September 2025, was seen as a key preparatory event ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. With India out, the event not only loses its top contender but also risks commercial setbacks.

The implications could be severe. India is the biggest cricket market in the region in terms of broadcasting rights, sponsorship, and viewership.

Without its participation, the Asia Cup's financial model could collapse, pushing organizers to either consider postponement or return to a hybrid format - similar to the one used in 2023, when India refused to play in Pakistan and all their matches were shifted to Sri Lanka.

For the PCB, which had lobbied hard to retain hosting rights for major events, this is yet another hurdle.

The firm position taken by BCCI could also affect the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, currently awarded to Pakistan. The possibility of the ICC being asked to relocate that event, or opt for a neutral venue, now looms large.

With bilateral ties suspended and India firm on not engaging with Pakistan-hosted events, even multilateral tournaments may face complications. The marquee India-Pakistan rivalry - which commands some of the highest viewership globally - now risks becoming an increasingly rare spectacle, perhaps limited to ICC events only, if at all.

Unless the ACC revises its leadership or offers an alternate structure, Asia Cup 2025 could be heading toward cancellation - a significant setback for the cricketing community in the region.
