India squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Who will be India's ODI captain if Rohit Sharma opts to rest from the series? Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain in ODI World Cup 2023, has also reportedly requested the BCCI to not pick him in the ODI squad.

With Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya unavailable, the BCCI selection committee will have the task of also picking an ODI captain to lead the team in a three-match series which starts from August 2.

Reports have emerged that Suryakumar Yadav will be named as the new T20I captain of the team. The number two ranked T20I batter in the world is set to become the successor of Rohit Sharma in the T20I format.

Hardik Pandya was also in the race, but selectors have reportedly opted to go with Suryakumar. Hardik Pandya's fitness has been an issue over the years, and the selectors wanted to go with someone who is available for a longer period of time.

KL Rahul likely to be named the ODI captain for Sri Lanka series

India Today has reported that KL Rahul could be the number one choice of the selectors to lead the Indian ODI side in Sri Lanka. The three-match ODI series will start from August 2.

Rahul has established himself as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the Indian ODI side over the last few years. He played a crucial role in India's World Cup campaign in 2023. He was the fourth-highest run-scorer from India, and eighth in the overall list.

The right-hander scored 452 runs in 11 matches at an average of 75.33 and a strike rate of 90.76. Rahul was not picked in India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad, and would be raring to get back on the field and prove his mettle.
