India Contemplates Wicketkeeper Choice For Sri Lanka ODI Series, Says Sharma

Ahead of the ODI series against Sri Lanka, India's captain Rohit Sharma faces a tough decision selecting the team's wicketkeeper. With both KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant in contention, Sharma highlights the quality dilemma in choosing between the two.

India's cricket team faces a challenging decision regarding their wicket-keeper batsman selection for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma, who retired from T20Is after India's World Cup victory earlier this year, will lead the team. The Men in Blue recently triumphed over Sri Lanka 3-0 in a T20 series under Suryakumar Yadav's leadership.

Sharma acknowledged the difficulty in choosing between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the wicket-keeper position. Pant last played an ODI for India in November 2022 but returned to the national team for their T20 World Cup success in June. He also participated in two of the three T20 matches against Sri Lanka last month.

India's Wicketkeeper Selection Dilemma

KL Rahul has been solid behind the stumps and impressed during the 2023 50-overs World Cup at home. Sharma commented on the selection dilemma, saying, "It's a tough call. Both are quality players, you know the abilities of both. It's not easy to pick a team when you have players like that." He added that having such problems indicates quality within the squad.

The upcoming fixtures will be another test for new head coach Gautam Gambhir, who remains undefeated in his first three games. Sharma emphasized that while they aim to play good cricket and gain something from the series, it is not merely preparation for next year's Champions Trophy.

"We'll keep in mind what we want to achieve as a team but this is by no means preparation or practice (for the Champions Trophy). We want to play good cricket and get something out of the series. It's as simple as that," Sharma stated. He stressed maintaining high-quality cricket rather than treating it as mere preparation.

Sri Lanka will be without pacers Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka due to injuries. Dushmantha Chameera and Nuwan Thushara are also unavailable because of illness and a fractured thumb, respectively. Uncapped Mohamed Shiraz has been brought in as a replacement as Sri Lanka aims to recover from their recent T20 series whitewash defeat.

Despite retiring from T20s, Sharma is expected to continue leading India in ODIs with next year's Champions Trophy on the horizon. The upcoming matches will provide valuable insights into India's squad depth and readiness for future challenges.

"Of course we want to try everything possible, but when you're representing the nation, the quality of cricket should remain consistent with how we've played in recent years," Sharma said. He dismissed any notion of relaxing during their time in Colombo.

The series against Sri Lanka begins this Friday, promising intense competition as both teams look to assert dominance in 50-over cricket.
