India T20 World Cup 2026 Qualification Scenario: How can Suryakumar Yadav and Co. qualify for Semifinals after South Africa defeat?

By MyKhel Staff

India have dented their chances of the T20 World Cup 2026 semis with a dismal defeat at the hands of South Africa on Sunday (February 22).

The Indian team surrendered in front of the Proteas in Ahmedabad, as they crumbled to a defeat by 76 runs. Chasing 188 runs, the Indian batting suffered a huge collapse, and to their dismay, none could salvage them from the hole as they were bundled out for just 111 runs.

India T20 World Cup 2026 Semifinal Qualification Scenario

Although India have suffered a significant blow, Suryakumar Yadav and his troops still have their hopes alive to make it to the semifinals of the competition.

India's next matches in the Super 8s - against Zimbabwe in Chennai on February 26, against West Indies on March 1 in Kolkata.

2 Wins out of 2

India will have to win their last two matches to have any chance of qualification in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026. If they beat Zimbabwe and West Indies in a convincing manner, they are more than likely to advance to the semis.

1 Win out of 2

If India lose to either Zimbabwe or West Indies, their chances of qualification will diminish significantly. In that case, India will require South Africa to win all of their remaining two matches, while the team they lose to (West Indies or Zimbabwe) will have to lose their other two matches.

In that case, three teams will be locked on 2 points and then India will have to beat the other two in Net Run Rate in order to qualify for the semis.

Example: If West Indies beat Zimbabwe on Monday (Feb 23), India must win over West Indies and if they lose to Zimbabwe, then have to expect South Africa to beat both the West Indies and Zimbabwe.
