India to host Asia Cup 2025 in T20 format, Bangladesh get hosting rights for 2027 edition

India have been confirmed as the hosts for Asia Cup 2025, according to the Invitation for Expression of Interest (IEOI) from the Asian Cricket Council for sponsorship rights. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja would not be part of the tournament as it will be held in T20 format keeping in mind the next T20 World Cup scheduled to be held jointly by India and Sri Lanka in 2026.

Bangladesh will be hosting the Asia Cup 2027 in the ODI format. The continental showpiece event will be held ahead of the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa in the same year. The format of the Asia Cup has been kept as per the approaching ICC event since the last few editions.

The last Asia Cup was held in the ODI format just ahead of the World Cup 2023. India won the trophy for the record-extending eighth time, and will now have the opportunity to defend the title at home. The BCCI will be hosting the Asia Cup for the first time after 1990 when India defeated Sri Lanka in the final.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, both the editions will have 13 matches each. Apart from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, there will be a sixth participant picked via a qualifying tournament.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) were the official hosts for Asia Cup 2023, but were forced to agree for a hybrid model after India refused to travel to Pakistan. Four matches were held in Pakistan, while nine by Sri Lanka. India defeated Sri Lanka in the final.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to be held in Pakistan, but India have once again shown reluctance, and look in no mood to travel to the neighbouring country due to security concerns and a strained political relationship.
