India Tour Of England: ECB Changes Starting Timings For Upcoming T20I Series; Here's The Revised Timings

The ECB has decided to move the start times earlier for India's upcoming T20 internationals against England next month to suit the viewership of the Indian audience.

India's men's team is set to tour from July 1 to July 19, playing a total of eight white-ball matches, including five T20Is and three ODIs. Originally, three of the T20Is scheduled as evening fixtures were set to begin at 6:30 pm local time (11 pm IST), as confirmed last year. However, following discussions with broadcast partners, these matches will now start at 5:30 pm local time (10 pm IST).

Scheduling for England's home international matches is determined through coordination between the ECB, host venues, the visiting board, and broadcasters both in the UK and overseas, in this instance, Sky Sports and Sony Sports Network.

Why Are These Adjustments Made?

This adjustment away from the usual 6:30 pm slot, which has been standard in recent years, highlights the growing importance of high-revenue broadcast series, particularly those involving India, a dependence recently emphasized in the ECB's financial report.

The ECB is expected to turn a profit this year, largely driven by India's tour, but forecasts a loss in 2027 even with England hosting a men's Ashes series against Australia. In its report, the board highlighted that its income tends to fluctuate depending on the scheduling of lucrative broadcast series involving touring teams.

Demand for tickets for India's England tour has been extremely strong since they were released late last year. All three ODIs have already sold out, while only a limited number of seats remain across the five T20 internationals.

During the peak of the English summer, sunset occurs after 9 pm, meaning all five matches could conclude without the need for floodlights.

India Announces Squad For Upcoming T20I Series

India revealed their 16-player squad for the T20I series on Saturday, which also covers their two-match stop in Belfast against Ireland just beforehand. Shreyas Iyer has taken over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned his first call-up to the senior side.

Cricket Ireland has reported a surge in interest in the Ireland-India T20Is scheduled for June 26 and 28, where Sooryavanshi could potentially make his debut. However, both fixtures had already sold out before the squad announcement, with the Civil Service Ground at Stormont in Belfast expected to host around 4,500 spectators.
