India's Tour of New Zealand: Suryansh Shedge Likely to Join ODI Squad; Reports
New Delhi, October 14: Mumbai all-rounder Suryansh Shedge has emerged as a potential candidate for India's ODI squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand following an impressive showing in the recently concluded unofficial one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry.
The 23-year-old, who has already represented India in three T20Is during the England tour, recently returned to competitive cricket after recovering from a hamstring injury. He made an immediate impact in the List A series, claiming four wickets with his seam bowling in the opening match before producing a match-winning 66 in the final encounter.

According to a BCCI source, as quoted by PTI, Shedge has a strong chance of making the ODI squad, particularly because Nitish Kumar Reddy is expected to play a significant role in the Test series as a fourth seamer and lower-order batting option.
"Shedge has a very high chance of making it to the ODI squad," the source said, as quoted by PTI, explaining that Reddy may not feature in every ODI as he prepares for the subsequent red-ball assignment.
Shedge's improving bowling abilities could further strengthen his case. With Hardik Pandya having endured an extended period away from competitive cricket because of recurring injuries, India are exploring alternative seam-bowling all-rounders. Although Reddy remains an important option, his own injury history could influence the selectors' planning.
The scheduling of the New Zealand tour presents another challenge. Following five T20Is and five ODIs beginning October 22, the ODI series will start on November 4 in Auckland and conclude on November 15 in Tauranga. The first Test is scheduled to begin in Wellington on November 19, leaving the squad with limited preparation time.
With November 16 earmarked for travel, the Test players will have only two days of practice before the red-ball contest. India could therefore consider a larger ODI squad to provide greater flexibility and allow key Test players to focus on their preparations.
In this scenario, Shedge's ability to contribute with both bat and ball could make him a valuable addition as India finalise their plans for the demanding New Zealand tour.
